South Carolina
In the eighteenth century, South Carolina emerged as a prominent centre for skilled furniture makers from England, Scotland, and Europe, with Charleston at the forefront. The affluent planter class in the region drove a strong demand for fine craftsmanship, while the importation of objects, ideas, and artisans shaped evolving cabinetmaking traditions. Surviving furniture from Charleston and the Lowcountry includes pieces crafted by Huguenot artisans, who were among the first settlers in the area.
