Williams, David & Sons (1855-1880)

Williams, David & Sons

Llandeilo, Wales; cabinet maker (fl. 1855-1880)

David Williams was apprenticed to Thomas Jenkins of Llanelli in 1855 but appears to have served only two years. In 1875 he was recorded in New Road, Llandeilo. In 1880 he sold upholstery materials including springs, buttons, tacks and castors to William Thomas of Dulais Cabinet Works. By 1889 he had been joined by his sons David and John at the ‘Steam Cabinet & Chair Works & Saw Mills’ and the firm was titled David Williams & Sons. The two young men were both listed in the 1891 Census as cabinet makers, aged 24 (David) and 19 (John). A billhead of 1889 states that they were ‘Wholesale Cabinet and Chair Manufacturers, UPHOLSTERERS, UNDERTAKERS, Contractors and Builders’ (illus. Bebb (2007), fig. 1268).
