Tyson, Joseph

Lancaster, Lancs.; candle box and chair maker (b.1738-d.1803)

In 1780 made twelve rout chairs for a Mr. Wyman, plus four in ‘white' and two armed rout chairs. He was paid 5s each by Gillows for the twelve chairs, 4s 9d for the white chairs and 8s each for the armed rout chairs. He was recorded in the Gillow’s Petty Ledger for 1780-82. He bound six apprentices: Peter Bleasdale 1775, Richard Tomlinson 1779,  Joshua Bentham 1786, Isaac Boulton 1788, James Chambers 1796 and Robert Cocking 1797. Joseph Tyson, chair maker, died on 16 February 1803, aged sixty-four. His gravestone was recorded by K. Docton in his manuscript on inscriptions in St. Mary's Priory churchyard [1972, Lancaster Reference Library]. His widow Esther died on 13 February 1810, aged seventy-six.
