Twist, John

London & New York, USA; cabinet and maker, upholsterer and furniture broker (fl.1823-30)

Twist was listed as a cabinet maker, upholsterer and chair maker at Devonshire Place, Commercial Road, London (1823–28). He was at no. 2 (1823–24) and purchaaed a Sun Insurance policies on 20 October 1823 and 19 January 1824 for £450 on stock, utensils and goods in trust or on commission in a workshop at the corner of Barossa Street, Commercial Road [London Metropolitan Archive (LMA), Sun MS vol. 494, refs 1008873 and 1012572].

This was possibly the same John Twist, recorded in Whitechapel Road, London as furniture broker, cabinet maker and upholsterer (1826–28). He was at no. 181 as a broker (1826–27), and at no. 194 as a cabinet maker and upholsterer (1827–28).

A cabinet maker of the same name (aged 34) arrived on 8 April 1830 in New York from London; possibly the son of John Twist of Commercial Road and Whitechapel Road.
