Tomden, Frederick

London?; carver (fl.1797)

In June 1797 Frederick Tomden carved three tablets on the frieze of the sideboard table at Lytham Hall, (illus. Stuart (2008), pls 363 & 365). The quality of the work suggests that he was a London carver and perhaps the carved tablets were executed in London and applied in Lancaster. This might explain why the drawing does not illustrate the tablets but only the oval paterae and fluting which were probably by John Ford, the firm’s Lancaster carver.
