Tantum, Joseph (1719-43)

Tantum, Joseph, Gravel Lane, Houndsditch, London, cm (1719–d. 1743). In 1719 Francis Richardson, a Philadelphia goldsmith, recorded in his account book the purchase of ‘20 Looking Glasses’ from Tantum. [Winterthur, Delaware, Downs MS Lib.] Death of ‘Mr. Joseph Tantum, a wealthy cabinet maker, one of the People call'd Quakers’, at his house in Houndsditch, reported in London Evening Post, 9–11 August 1743. Notice given in Daily Advertiser, 27 March 1744 of sale of his entire stock in trade, ‘consisting of very neat Bookcases, Walnut-Tree and Mahogany Buroes, a large Pier Glass in a carv'd gold Frame, Sconces ditto, Mahogany card and other Tables, double Chest of Drawers…’; catalogues to be had from ‘Mr. Smith's, Upholder, at the Chair in Fleet Street’.
