Sweet, Thomas (1790-1791)

Sweet, Thomas

Lancaster and Manchester, Lancs.; carver and gilder, (fl.1790-91)

He called on Gillows in August 1790 asking for work. Gillows wrote to Richard Walker, cabinet maker of Manchester, for whom Sweet had worked previously, asking for a character reference and ‘if he be a sober honest & good workman’. In a postscript they asked ‘should be glad to know what wages you gave him when he wrought for you by the day’. Gillows must have been satisfied since they employed him and in February 1791 he carved and gilded cornices for Mr. Sudell of Blackburn. The cornices were made by Crowdson.
