Stonier, John & William (1822–1854)

Stonier, John & William

High Street, Hanley (or Shelton) and Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffordshire; cabinet maker, upholder and chair maker (fl. 1822–54)

John Stonier was recorded in High Street and also had a house at Charles Street, Hanley in 1822. Possibly the successor to Thomas Stonier who was trading in the High Street as a cabinet maker in 1818. A painted pine corner cupboard has been identified from the workshop with a pencilled inscription underneath the top section which reads, ‘George Boultons bros(?) at Mr. John Stoniers Hanley, Staffordshire. June 10th 1827’. The date, 1827, is also pencilled on the top of the bottom section (illus., Cotton, Regional Furniture (1990), figs 1,2,4 and 5). George Boulton (Bolton) apparently worked as a journeyman in the shop of John Stonier.

John Stonier was listed as a cabinet maker in High Street, Hanley 1830 [Pigot's Directory].

Possibly the same John Stonier who was listed in Ironmarket, Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffordshire, as chair maker in 1830 and a cabinet maker & upholsterer, 1831–35 [Poll books].

There was also William Stonier, cabinet maker, at Ironmarket 1818–34 and as cabinet maker & upholsterer (1835).  The relationship between John & William is not known.
