Soederberg, Thomas (1789–1802)
Soederberg (or Sonderberg), Thomas
Tottenham Ct Rd, London; cabinet maker and ‘ebonist’ (fl.1789–1802)
At 16 Tottenham Ct Rd in 1789 but at 19 in 1793–94. Bankrupt, Liverpool Advertiser, 14 May 1798. He may be the Söderberg apprenticed to the Court Cabinet-maker Lorentz Nordin in 1756 at the age of thirteen. In England he attracted the patronage of Queen Charlotte at Buckingham House and perhaps at Frogmore in 1793 where a pair of refined semi-circular tables may be his work. In November 1792 he supplied ‘inlaid tables’ for the 5th Duke of Bedford, for Bedford House, London at a cost of £28. Payments were made to Soederberg in connection with the furnishing of Broadlands, Hants., by the 2nd Viscount Palmerston including £40 12 6d in 1795-96 for unspecified pieces. He supplied the Earl of Uxbridge with furniture for Plas Newydd in 1802. This last commission included ‘2 sophas 8 ft long finished in Morocco [Leather] Ornamented in white ivory’ costing 20 guineas each
