Snowdon, Robert Or Snowdon & Son (1821–40)
Snowdon (or Snowden), Robert or Snowdon & Son
near the Church, Northallerton, Yorks.; cabinet maker (fl.1821–40)
In 1840 listed as Robert Snowdon jnr, but an earlier trade label states ‘Snowden & Son’ suggesting that both father and son named Robert were involved in the business. Appear to have marked their furniture on a regular basis, and a number of items are recorded in early 19th-century styles. These include a sarcophagus-shaped cellaret on lion paw feet, a Davenport with sliding top, a writing box, a washstand (Cannon Hall, Barnsley, Yorks.) a bedside table (illus. Jones, Regional Furniture (1993), fig.75), a canterbury (op.cit., fig.46), both with printed paper labels and in the Kirklees Museums, and a chest of drawers. All are mahogany items of relatively plain functional form. The Davenport was supplied to a Mr Hayes who apparently lived at Whitby, Yorks, and the invoice dated 21 September 1821 indicates that this item cost £8 8s (Figs 26–28).
