Smith, John (1768-1775)
Smith, John
Lancaster, Lancs.; cabinet maker (fl.1768-75)
The son of Richard Smith, innkeeper of Skippool, parish of Poulton, Lancashire, he was apprenticed to Richard Gillow, cabinet maker, to serve from 25 October 1768. In January 1775 Richard and Robert Gillow wrote to their cousin John Gillow at Great Singleton asking him to procure notes on the Bank of England for Robert Gillow to carry as he set out for London to run the Oxford Street shop. If he was unable to bring them to Lancaster it was suggested that ‘our man John Smith is now at his fathers at Skippool & perhaps it may suit him to come over & bring it before the 23rd inst. in cash if you cannot procure bills’.
