Smith, James

London; upholder (fl.1721–30)

The son of James Smith of Passenham, Northamptonshire, grazier, apprenticed to John Howard on 4 October 1721 and free of the Upholders’ Company by servitude, 2 April 1729.

In the following year he appears to have been in the employ of Robert North and signed a receipt for Paul Foley for £2 4s ‘for the youth of my master Robert North’ [Guildhall Library Upholders’ Company records; Herefordshire Record Office, Foley MS, F/AIII/ 55].
