Sargeant, Sergeant or Sargent, John

Lancaster, Lancs.; joiner and cabinet maker (fl.1760-1766)

The son of Richard Sargeant, husbandman of Garstang he was indentured on 18 February 1760 to Richard Gillow with the consent of ‘John Sargeant, gentleman of Skerton’. The latter was his uncle, a Roman Catholic priest, who paid the £10 fee. A long case clock signed by John Sargent has been recorded. He was one of five workmen with William Lupton, Will Taylor, William Askew and Jos. Foster who contributed to a ‘large piece of furniture’ made for John France Esq. in 1766 (illus. Stuart (2008), pl. 598). He was paid 16s for two weeks' work on the piece.
