Sandeman, Robert

Edinburgh, Scotland; architect, cabinet maker (fl.1852-62)

Robert Sandeman, was the son of George Sandeman, a wright and cabinet maker in Edinburgh. Census records show George trained as an architect (1851) and worked as an architect and master cabinet maker employing 29 men, 5 boys and 2 women (1861). He then moved to Newcastle, working for the rest of his life as an architect. 

A rococo revival chair, by R. Paul (carver) and R. Sandeman, inscribed 1856, made of elmwood with a tapestry seat depicting a floral basket in lilac and brown is at the National Museums Scotland (K.2008.94), illus. Jackson (2024), fig. 7.10.

R. Sandeman is recorded in the 1862 International Exhibition, London as exhibiting two 'Mirror tables, in walnut and Quebec ash' (Class 30, Furniture, Paper-Hanging and Decoration, exh. 5808).
