Ruben, Morris

London; furniture maker (fl.1887-1926)

Born in Vilna, Lithuania, in 1864, and brought to London by his parents at the age of 3. After education at the Jews’ Free School (then in the East End) he was apprenticed to his father, Jacob. By 1887 he was self-employed with a staff of six and said to be making fine quality furniture. By 1900 there were 35 employees, increasing to 200 by 1914. The firm closed on Ruben’s death in 1926.
