Rousay Home Industries (1895-1900)

Rousay Home Industries

Orkney, Scotland; wood craftsmen (fl.1895-1900)

Lady Eliza D’Oyley Burroughs started this association in Orkney in 1895. The Orkney Herald reported in November 1896 that the Home Industries had been going on there for 3 months in a cottage lent for the purpose and £23 worth of work had been sold. The next year’s sale opened in July and displays included Orkney straw-backed chairs, baskets and spinning wheels. Over 135 people attended the exhibition, purchasing £20 worth of goods and placing orders worth £6. A photograph of Lady Eliza D’Oyley Burroughs at Trumland House, Orkney, c.1900 with a spinning wheel by John Logie is illus. Carruthers (2013), p. 52. When HRH the Duke of York visited Orkney in July 1898 he was presented with an Orkney chair.
