Dublin, Ireland; upholder and auctioneer (fl. 1782-95)
A John Preston, cabinet maker of Dublin, was a subscriber to the second edition of Chippendale’s Director (1755). He may have been the father of the John Preston recorded at Francis-street, 1771; Bride Alley, 1772-85; 7 Henry Street, 1793-9. He was elected Warden of the Upholders' Guild from 1782 to 1783 and Master from 1794 to 1795.
He married twice: first in 1771 - ‘Marriage: Mr. Preston, Auctioneer, to Miss Ann Gaynor, both of Francis-street’ [Faulkner’s Dublin Journal, 6-8 August 1771]. Second in 1773 – ‘Marriage: Mr. Preston, Upholder, to Miss Willis, both of Bride-street’ [Public Gazetteer, 29 June-3 July 1773].
Took as apprentice John Welf (1782-89), who was made Freeman of the City of Dublin as an Upholder by Service, Midsummer 1789.
