Preston, John junior (1801-1845)

Preston, John junior

Dublin, Ireland; cabinet maker, upholder and auctioneer (fl. 1801-45)

Son of John Preston snr, Freeman of the City of Dublin as a Saddler by Birth, Midsummer 1802.

Recorded at 7 Henry Street, 1801-12; 6 Henry Street, 1812-14; 6 Henry Street, 1813-14; 8 Henry Street, 1815-19; 7 and 8 Henry Street, 1820-45 (trading as Preston and Son, 1806-45).

The Prestons (Nathaniel and John) supplied furniture for the second Earl of Belmore at Castle Coole beginning in 1807 and lasting until 1825. The whole account amounted to £26, 367. Much remains at Castle Coole, including a state bed made for an anticipated visit of George IV in 1821 (illus. Glin & Peill (2007), fig. 254).

There is some doubt whether the furniture was made by the Prestons or merely imported from London.
