Porter, James

London; cabinet maker and upholder, upholsterer and sofa maker (fl.1825–45)

At 19 Stephens Street, Tottenham Court Road as an upholder in 1825; and High Street, Camden Town, 1838–39, as a cabinet maker and upholder, no. 166 High St in 1839. A rosewood card table c. 1840 is ink-stamped ‘J. Porter, Cabinet Chair and Sofa Manufacturer, Upholsterer’ (illus. Gilbert (1996), fig. 738, sold Phillips, 22 March 1995, lot 167).

The 1845 London Post Office Directory listed two James Porters; one at 7 & 9 Sarah Place, Old Street Road as cabinet maker and the other as an upholsterer at 166 High Street, Camden Town. One or both may be the man recorded 1825-1839.
