Pitt, Richard (1778-1809)

Pitt, Richard

London; upholder, cabinet maker, undertaker, carver and gilder (fl. 1778–1809)

Situated at 5 Princes Street, Coventry Street, Leicester Fields (1778) where he was trading as an upholder, cabinet maker and undertaker. He was apparently operating a successful business because in 1778 he purchased an insurance policy of £1,500 of which £1,050 was for utensils and stock. However, by January 1780 he was declared bankrupt. Apart from the Princes Street address the bankruptcy notice also added ‘late of St. Albans-St., Westminster’.

By 1784 he had recommenced trading, but possibly lacking the capital to re-enter his old trade, he worked as a carver and gilder. He used the Princes Street address in 1784 and subsequently moved to 80 Berwick Street where he insured goods for £200.

Located at 20 Gerrard Street, Soho, 1790–93, and was at 86 Wardour St, Soho in 1809.
