Pitt, John (1714-d.1759)

Pitt, John

Upton-cum-Chalvey, Bucks.; wheelwright and chair maker (b.1714-d.1759)

Born at Upton-cum-Chalvey, near Slough, 15 March 1714, son of William Pitt, wheelwright and chair maker (d.1735). Married 29 September 1743 Mary Hayes, and was buried 13 January 1759 in Upton-cum-Chalvey. His trade label is recorded beneath the seat of a Windsor chair. The address can only be deciphered in part and reads ‘… LOU … DSO’. This is the earliest known Windsor chair that can be attributed to a known maker. Several others have been attributed to Pitt on stylistic grounds (illus. Parrott & Harding-Hill, Regional Furniture (2005), figs 1-6).
