Phillips, H. (1889-1899)
Phillips, H.
London; carpenter, cabinet maker (fl.c.1889-1890s)
A carpenter, cabinet maker and member of the Guild of Handicraft who, in the early 1890s, conducted a short-lived ‘Country Centre’ of the Guild at the progressive boys’ school at Abbotsholme, Staffordshire. Possibly the same man, as H.G. Phillips of the Guild of Handicraft, who was reputedly one of its first members after its formation in 1888, and seemingly did not move to Chipping Campden in 1902.
The work of H. Phillips was shown by the Guild and School of Handicraft at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition, London, in 1889:
- a mirror, in bass-wood, stained green and decorated with gesso and gold. Designed by C.R. Ashbee, cabinet work by H. Phillips, gesso and gilding by J. Williams and W. Hardiman (cat. no. 194)
- a studio cabinet in oak and colour work, designed by Ashbee, executed by H. Phillips, Ashbee and Walter Taylor (cat. no. 803).
