He was awarded an honourable mention for his brass and iron bedsteads at the 1878 Paris Exhibition [The Furniture Gazette, 21 September 1878); was a prize winner at the Sydney Exhibition, 1879; and was awarded a 3rd class order of merit at the Melbourne Exhibition, 1880 [The Furniture Gazette, 19 June 1880 and 16 & 30 April 1881].
In 1886 Phillips sued a former employee, Mr Richardson, for £23 7s 6d in connection the wrongful delivery of three goods sent to Ireland by the plaintiff. The judge agreed that the plaintiff had fraudulently obtained the goods but felt that defendants had not acted with reasonable care and caution so gave judgement for the plaintiff for £19 5s [The Furniture Gazette, 1 July 1886].
