Philipson, W. (1885-1922)

Philipson, W.

Kendal, Westmorland; cabinet maker (fl.1885-1922)

Born in Kendal, he was the foreman at The Handicrafts from its establishment in 1885, only retiring on Arthur Simpson’s death in 1922. His role was to approve the quality of work produced and one of the Simpson family recalled him as being very tough and bad tempered, known to strike an apprentice with a poorly made tray. He was also night watchman for Martin’s bank and caretaker for Rhodes, the jewellers, above which he lived.
