Llanbryn-mair, Montgomeryshire, Wales; carpenter and wheelwright (fl.1858-75)

This maker kept an account book between 1858 and 1875 which records his work over the period. He was a full time tradesmen and most of the surrounding farmers and smallholders were his customers. He charged from 1s. 9d to 2s. 6d. per day but was often paid in kind with produce or fuel. He carried out a wide range of agricultural work, including wagon building, making and repairing farm tools, diary implements, ploughs &c., and did some building. He was also a turner, glazer, paper hanger and painter. Among the furniture he produced were cupboards, chairs, tables, shelves and beds. His grandson, Iorwerth Peate, wrote about his life and work in ‘Two Montgomeryshire Craftsmen’, Montgomeryshire Collections (1944), pp. 3-10.
