Mustoe, Steve

Sapperton, Gloucestershire & Froxfield, Hampshire; metalsmith (1903-1920s)

Mustoe was a local Gloucestershire man who was taken on by Alfred Bucknell to carry out the heavy work in his metalwork workshops, which supplied Ernest Gimson’s Daneway Workshops. Mustoe reputedly excelled at welding and made steel fire irons with a spiral twist decoration. When Bucknell went off to the First World War and then did not return to Sapperton, Gimson offered Mustoe and two other young smiths the tools and financial assistance to set up their own workshop in Sapperton. In the early 1920s Mustoe moved to Geoffrey Lupton’s Froxfield workshops to make metal fittings for the Bedales library project.
