Miles was recorded on his own at 18 Princes Street, Red Lion Street in 1800 and at 11 Orange Street, 1808–11. He was also listed in a partnership with Thomas Abbey at the Orange Street address as carvers, gilders and joiners from 1808–13 and at a second location at 15 Cooks Row, St Pancras in 1808.

Miles alone purchased Sun Insurance policies on 27 August 1800 for £200 including £50 on utensils and stock; and on 17 October 1808 for £500, including £300 on stock, glass and utensils in his house, and £200 on household goods, stock and utensils at 15 Cooks Row. Miles and Abbey took out Sun Insurance policies on 29 December 1808 and 25 January 1810 for £600, £300 on stock, utensils and glass in their house; and £300 on household goods, stock and utensils at a house in their tenure, 15 Cooks Row; and on 12 February 1812 for £800, including £100 on Abbey's household goods, £400 on stock, utensils and glass, and £300 on James Miles's household goods in a house at Foulmin, Cambridgeshire [The London Archives (TLA), Sun MS vol. 419, ref. 706226; vol. 447, ref. 821498; vol. 443, ref. 825053; vol. 451, ref. 839652; vol. 457, ref. 867716].
