Meller was recorded in the 1850 US Federal census as born in Ireland c. 1810, forty years old and residing in Charleston in the parish of St Michael and St Phillip. There were fourteen men living in the dwelling house aged between twenty-three and fifty; six were Irish, one Italian, two German, one Cuban and four Americans: three from Massachusetts and one from South Carolina. Pierce Meller was the only man working in the furniture trade.
