From 1854-56 traded as Beakey & McDowell, cabinet makers and upholsterers, 52 Mary Street and with manufactory at 39, 40, 44, 45 & 46 Stafford Street. Sole trader 1856-89 at 51 & 52 Mary Street and manufactory at 7 & 8 Ryders Row.

Trade card dated 22 April 1863 reads: ‘Bought of HUGH MCDOWELL (formerly Beakey & McDowell), Cabinet Maker Upholsterer Valuator & Auctioneer, Funerals Supplied & Conducted. Warerooms, 51 & 52, Mary Street Factory, 7 & 8 Ryders Row. Dublin (illus. Glin, Furniture History (1985), fig.19).

H. M'Dowell exhibited at the Dublin International Exhibition, 1865. His display included a gilt pier table, walnut chiffonier, mahogany sideboard, walnut ottoman and easy arm chair, and a lady's chair (Section XXVI, exh. 721).
