Matthews & Clark (1896-1905)
Matthews & Clark
93 Rivington Street & 11 Pownall Road, Dalston, London; bamboo furniture manufacturers (fl.1896-1905)
Formerly the firm of Aizdu Bamboo Company, Matthews & Clark initially produced flower stands, many of which incorporated ceramic ‘Majolica’ pots which were produced at their own potteries in Ayrford, Longton, Staffordshire. In 1897 they expanded their business to ‘undertake to supply furnishers with any article they may require in bamboo that is capable of being carried out in that material’ and by 1903 they were leading bamboo furniture makers, often using art green matting in their furniture. Examples of tables, plant stands, cabinets and a bedroom suite, as advertised in contemporary publications are illus. Walkling (1979), pp. 77-79.
