Made Freeman of the City of Dublin as a Joiner by Birth, Christmas 1782. Matthews was elected Warden of the Joiners’ Guild from 1782 to 1783 and Master from 1786 to 1787.
Recorded at 7 St Patrick’s Close, 1782-90 (in partnership with his father, John Mathews senior, 1782-4); 24 St Patrick's Close 1791—99.
