The son of John Marsh, a wire drawer of London, apprenticed to George Robinson on 15 November 1721, and Samuel Tilbe, freeman draper, on 3 March 1724.

He was admitted a freeman of the Upholders’ Company by servitude on 27 August 1729 [Guildhall Library, Upholders’ Company records].
