The firm was listed as cabinet makers and upholsterers at 270 Sauciehall Street in The Furniture Directory, 1876, and in the same publication of the following year also as bed, mattress & bedding at the same address & also 3 Scott Street. Their branch at 28 Jamaica Street enlarged its upholstery & carpet department in 1882 [The Furniture Gazette, 8 April 1882].

In 1884 Joseph Newbigging Smith bought the business at Jamaica Street, including its assets, He discharged its liabilities and continued trading under its former name. The firm retained its businesses at 342 Sauchiehall Street & 3 Scott Street, Glasgow [The Furniture Gazette, 19 April 1884]. 

John MacKay disposed of his premises at 342 Sauchiehall Street and moved to his old premises of 354 Sauchiehall Street, where he continued his cabinet and household furnishing business under his own name [The Furniture Gazette, 24 May 1884]. 

The firm was listed as cabinet makers at 354 Sauchiehall Street in The Furniture Gazette: Classified List of the Furniture, Upholstery, and Allied Trades (1886).
