Lloyd, John (1763-1800)
Lloyd, John
Llanfihangel, and Llanfair Caereinion, Montgomeryshire, Wales; joiner and cabinet maker (fl.1763-1800)
This maker first lived and worked in Llanfihangel yng Ngwynfa where he produced cases for the prolific clock maker Samuel Roberts of Llanfair Caereinion (illus. Bebb (2007), figs 869-871, 874). Lloyd pasted hand written labels into the cases with his name, the case number and the date. Roberts’ records show that Lloyd bought at least some of the movements from him, presumably to sell both clocks and cases to his own customers. A clock dated 1777 bears the label number 43 and one dated 1787 bears the number 68, so his output was not large and he presumably earned his living by making other furniture as well. In 1763 Lloyd married Ann Evans of Llanfair Caereinion. In 1777 he and his wife moved to a smallholding in the parish of Llanfair Caereinion. He and Roberts set up a Clock Club, into which members paid 2 shillings monthly towards the ownership of a clock for which lots were drawn. Each member continued to pay 2s until all members had a clock. Lloyd’s close connection with Roberts continued until 1800 when he witnessed the latter’s will.
