Joynson, Samuel (1788-1789)

Joynson, Samuel

London and Lancaster, Lancs.; furniture painter and japanner (fl.1788-89)

In August 1788 Samuel Joynson, his wife and family set out from London by coach to work for Gillows of Lancaster. When he reached Warrington, Gillows were obliged to write to a customer, Walter Kerfoot esq., who lived in the town, to lend Joynson some money as he was ‘…in great distress for want of money to convey him hither. As we have no means of giving him speedy relief we should esteem it a particular favour if you would give him 2 guineas which we will thankfully repay you, or allow for it in acct. and please to take his receipt for the same’. Gillows added that it would be a ‘... great service to the poor man and will much oblige’ the firm. Samuel Joynson, painter, was listed in the Gillow’s Petty Cash Book in January 1789 and the Petty Ledger for 1790-91.
