In both 1820 and 1823 Johnson was shown at Clayton Street and a directory of 1821 also listed him at 33 Tarleton Street with a shop at 21 Church Street.

Made free 10 March 1820 and in this year married Miss Elizabeth Dawson at St Anne's Church. Their infant son Julius died in June 1823 aged 22 months [Freemen register; Liverpool Mercury, 14 June 1820, 6 June 1823].
