Jewell, S. & H. (1830-1941)
Jewell, S. & H.; Jewell, A.
Little Queen Street & Great Queen Street, Holborn, London; cabinet makers, bed & mattress makers (fl.1830–1941)
A billhead at Standen, East Grinstead, Sussex for furniture supplied to the house on 1 May 1894 by S. & H. Jewell, of 29-31 Little Queen Street, states it was founded in 1830. However no pre-1840 directory entries have been traced. S. & H. Jewell traded as bed & mattress makers at 29, 30 & 31 Little Queen Street & 1 Great Queen Street and A. Jewell as cabinet maker at 1 Great Queen Street [The Furniture Gazette Directory, 1876]. S. & H. Jewell listed at 131 & 132 High Holborn as antique furniture dealers, 1930-41.
A set of reproduction Regency-style chairs made or retailed by S. & H. Jewell are in the Great Parlour, Chequers, Buckinghamshire (the country residence of British Prime Minsters). These were supposedly purchased by Lord & Lady Lee of Fareham, who owned the house from 1909 and in 1917 gifted the estate to the Nation.
