James, Philip (1769-1811)

James, Philip, 63 Holywell St, Shoreditch, London, u and undertaker (1769–1811). A business of modest size. In 1770 warehouses and workshops were insured for £500 but later figures suggest a decline in cover for trade stock. In 1777 the warehouses and workshops were only covered for £200 and in 1782 a similar figure was thought sufficient for the utensils and stock. Total insurance cover in 1777 was £900, falling to £800 in 1791 and rising again to £1,200 in 1802. Of this latter total however only £60 appears to have been for utensils and stock. The business is included in the list of master cabinet makers in Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803.
