Jaques, Thomas & John
London; turners, Tunbridge ware makers and turners (fl.1798-1850)
Thomas Jaques was located at 65 Leather Lane and by 1817 had an additional address at 22 Baldwin Gardens, Leather Lane (1817-23). At this time he went into partnership with John Jaques and the business traded as Thomas & John Jaques until c.1839 when John acquired an additional address (or possibly moved) to 102 Hatton Garden.
Initially the business specialised in turning ivory, hardwoods and bone with billiard balls an important product. They also sold ivory, tortoiseshell and hardwoods. From 1835 they also manufactured Tunbridge ware for both turnery and cabinet wares.
After 1840 the business was continued by John Jaques as a specialist games equipment manufacturer. An ivory chess set in a papier mache box (c.1849-50) is in the collection of the British Museum (2004,1214.1.a-hh).
