Hubbard, John (1799)

Hubbard, John

Grantham, Lincs.; Windsor chair maker (b.1799).

Son of Richard Hubbard of Grantham. Baptised 27 December 1799 and probably trained by his father. By 1828 had moved to Basford, Notts., recorded as a lace maker. In the 1841 Census he was recorded as a tailor, with wife Elizabeth and daughter Elizabeth.

A number of Windsor chairs are known stamped I HUBBARD GRANTHAM. These probably date from between c.1820 and 1828 (illus. Sergeant and Parker, Regional Furniture (2019), figs 20-29).

Previously thought to have been the wheelwright John Hubbard recorded in the 1841 Census at Granby Yard, Lincoln (see DEFM).
