Howes, George (1826-1868)

Howes, George

Leicester, Leicestershire and Birmingham, Warwickshire; cabinet maker, carriage builder (fl.1826-68)

George was probably apprenticed  to his father, Joshua Howes of Leicester. He was admitted a freeman of Birmingham in 1826 [Leicester freemen rolls].

The second son of Joshua & Mary, George Massey Howes, had moved to Birmingham by the time of his marriage in October 1811. He remained there for the rest of his life, listed in the 1826 Leicester Poll Book as a 'non-resident cabinet maker' and the census of 1841, 1851 & 1861 recorded him in the same trade in Birmingham. By 1862 he was described as coach builder and by 1868 as a carriage builder.

George's sister, Sarah, married Leicester cabinet maker, William Read, in 1811.
