Holton, Thomas & Fred

Well Street, Buckingham, Buckinghamshire; carpenter, cabinet maker, upholsterer, builder, undertaker and furniture dealer (fl.1861-1921)

Thomas Holton,( b.c. 1826) Gawcott, Buckinghamshire, was recorded in census living in Buckingham as master carpenter (1851), cabinet maker employing two men and three apprentices (1861), builder (1871), builder employing eleven men and two boys (1881) and builder and cabinet maker (1891). He died in 1894. 

Of his children, Fred (b. 1865) was working as a carpenter in his father’s business from the age of sixteen and was listed as a cabinet maker and builder (1901) and as a house furnisher and cabinet maker (1911), and as antique dealer etc. (1921). His sons, Harold (b. 1890) and Thomas E.E. (b.1893) also worked in the same trades.

The Graham Gadd Archive (NMS) includes bills (above) for Thomas Holton (dated 1890) and Fred (dated 1898). These show the family business at Well Street, Buckingham with Thomas’ trades as cabinet maker, builder etc. and Fred’s as builder contractor, cabinet maker, upholsterer, undertaker and furniture dealer.
