Hartley, J. or T.

Lancaster, Lancs.; chair maker (fl.1799)

A hall chair apparently made for the Christian Curwen family of Belle Isle was signed ‘J (or T) Hartley' and dated ‘Sept 3 1799' [Southampton Univ. Hartley Lib. Special Collections, Ms. 301. Box 17, 3 of 3 folders, 1734/11-2]. This man may be a descendant of James Hartley, son of Thomas Hartley of Ellel, near Lancaster, shoemaker, who was apprenticed to Randall Smith, house carpenter and joiner of Lancaster, on 29 September 1746.
