Lancaster, and Liverpool, Lancs., and Oxford Street, London; cabinet maker (b.1736-d.1779)
The son of George Gillow, yeoman of Great Singleton, he was apprenticed to his uncle Robert Gillow (c.1703-1772) from 11 November 1750. He acted as a journeyman for his uncle and cousin from 1757 when in December he was paid 18s 8d, and other larger sums were paid him in 1758, as in May when he was paid in full £2 7s 6d In December 1759 he was paid £7 18s for ‘stock’ he had made. On 5 July 1760 Richard wrote to his cousin James: ‘your brother Thomas has gone to work at Lpl’. He founded the London shop in Oxford Street in 1769-1770 and entered a partnership with William Taylor which ended with Taylor's death in 1775. He was joined by his cousin Robert Gillow (1747-1795) in January 1776 and he died in 1779. See also the full entry for the Gillows firm.
