Gardner advertised in The Furniture Gazette, 12 April 1873, and was listed in The Furniture Gazette Directory (1876) & The Furniture Gazette: Classified List of the Furniture, Upholstery, and Allied Trades (1886).
The business displayed wooden spring mattresses and parquet flooring and were awarded both silver & bronze medals at the Forestry International Exhibition, Edinburgh,1884 [The Furniture Gazette, 26 July & 4 October 1884].

A billhead (above), dated 1885 for A Gardner & Son, cabinet makers, upholsterers, carpet and bedding manufacturers, inventors and patentees of a wood seasoning process, spring mattress and parquet flooring, at 36 Jamaica Street, is included in the Graham Gadd Archive (NMS). The document states that the firm was established in 1832 and, in addition to the 1884 Exhibition medals, it had received three awards at the Sanitary Institute of Great Britain, 1883 and medals for the treatment of timber at the Paris Exhibitions, 1875 and 1878.
A late 19th century mahogany display cabinet with glazed doors labelled A. Gardner, Jamaica Street, Glasgow, was sold by Sothebys Belgravia, 26 April 1978 (lot 136).
