Listed at On the Common, Worksop (Pigot's Directory, 1822); at Radford and Eastgate, Worksop (DEFM, 1832; White's Directory, 1932); and at Eastgate, Worksop (1841 Census).

Gabbitass was one of a group of Windsor chair makers operating in north Nottinghamshire from the second quarter of the 19th century. Two chairs have been recorded branded under the seat ‘I GABBITASS’ [DEFM].

His will was proved 9 January 1840. The business was carried on by his wife Elizabeth [Temple Newsam Exhibition Catalogue, Common Furniture, 1982, no. 26; Nottinghamshire Record Office probate records [DEFM].

John was 40 years of age in 1841 and the father of Frederick Gabbitass.
