Flaxman, William (1828)

Flaxman, William

Woodbridge, Suffolk; joiner (fl.1828)

Handwritten label found inside lid of mahogany writing box with inlaid decoration, one false and one frieze drawer. Label reads: ‘William Flaxman made this box in June 1828. Aged 16 Years and 8 Months. Woodbridge Suffolk.’ William was probably member of the Flaxman family of carpenters and builders in Woodbridge from the late eighteenth to approximately mid nineteenth centuries. The name Flaxman is written several times inside the front cover and three times inside the back cover of the copy of the 1801 Cabinet & Chair Makers Norwich Book of Prices at Wintherthur.
