John Fairbairn was an English Catholic, born in Northumberland, c.1745. He appears to have arrived in London about 1767.

He was listed at 104 Titchfield Street, Oxford Market, 1784 and at ‘Three Tuns’, Portman Mews, Portman Street, 1785. He purchased Sun Insurance policies in 1784 for £400, utensils and stock accounting for £100; and on 11 March 1785 for £200, of which his house and adjoining workshop behind 104 Titchfield Street accounted for £100 [The London Archives (TLA), Sun MS vol. 321, p. 548; 11 March 1785, ref. 501793].
