London; cabinet maker, upholder and chair maker (fl.1811–28)
Recorded as cabinet & chair maker at 126 Old Street in 1811. Then also as upholder in Carthusian Street, Charterhouse at no. 5 in 1817, and no. 3, 1820–28.
Emery purchased Sun Insurance policies on 6 July 1820 for £400 on a house at 3 Carthusian Street, unfurnished; and on 1 December 1821 for £1,000 of which £180 accounted for stock, utensils and goods in trust in his house, where no work was done; and £100 on those in workshops and warehouse [Guildhall Library, Sun MS vol. 485, ref. 968870; vol. 486, ref. 981962].
One of a pair of chairs stamped ‘Js. Emery’ in ebonised beech with cane seats, c. 1815-20, is illustrated in Gilbert (1996), fig. 322 and was sold Sotheby’s, 20 Sept 1991, lot 155.
