Eddershaw, F C
Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales; cabinet maker and upholsterer (fl.1894)
F C Eddershaw took over the premises of Daniel Lewis at 19 High Street, Swansea, c.1890. The shop was depicted in The Cambrian in 1894 (illus. Bebb (2007), figs 1278-9). The firm offered a comprehensive furnishing service based on the ‘medium class of furniture, substantial and tasteful’, although some ‘elegant and expensive’ furniture was also stocked. According to the Cambrian: ‘A great portion of the furniture is made on the premises by skilled and experienced workmen. The room is replete with all the latest conveniences, and each workman sticks to his special forte’, Another published account stated that ‘In kitchen dressers Mr Eddershaw has won for himself quite a reputation. They are made by his own experienced workmen… It is a sign of the times that there is a growing demand for solid furniture; and that the “cheap, but nasty” policy is dying out’.
